Matthew Olson - an American Swedophile finding his Swedish roots
Matthew Olson is all about Sweden; he's got a collection of Dala Horses, knows everything you need to know about a "Smörgåsbord", and he's visited more IKEA warehouses than anyone you can imagine.
- But it all starts with his Swedish heritage.
In 1889, David Olson, Matthew's great-great-grandparent, left Sandhem in southern Sweden for a life in Queens, NYC. Twenty years later, in 1922, David and his wife left their life in the suburbs and bought a farm outside Medusa in Upstate New York - a farm Matthew still runs to this day.
I steered this road trip to a field overlooking his valley to hear all about Matthew's story - and how he finally found both an ally and a family in the small village in Sweden where it all began.
